Perfect Days (PG)

Dir: Wim Wenders 2023 | 125 mins

Japanese with English subtitles

The latest film from acclaimed writer-director Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire). Set in Tokyo, the story celebrates the hidden joys of Japanese culture.

Winner of the Best Actor award at Cannes 2023, Koji Yakusho (Babel, 13 Assassins) stars as Hirayama, a contemplative middle-aged man who lives a life of modesty and serenity. He spends his days balancing his job as a dutiful caretaker of Tokyo’s numerous public toilets with his passion for music, literature and photography.

As we join him on his structured daily routine, a series of unexpected encounters gradually begin to reveal a hidden past that lies behind his otherwise content and harmonious life.

Nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards.

‘Koji Yakusho’s performance is a masterclass in nuance’ ★★★★ Empire

Red Island (12A)

Dir: Robin Campillo 2024 | 117 mins

French with English subtitles

Inspired by filmmaker Robin Campillo’s own childhood. Early 1970s. Eight-year-old Thomas is growing up on a French Air Force base in recently independent Madagascar. From the innocent perspective of a child, the island is a paradise and a playground. But as adolescence grows near, he begins observing his parents and their circle of friends with new eyes. Childhood innocence slowly gives way to a more shadowy understanding of the hypocrisy and racism that defines France’s military involvement on the island.

‘This visually exquisite, tender film about a boy growing up in a military air base on an former colony is a wonderful watch’ ★★★★★ The Guardian

Daliso Chaponda - Feed This Black Man Again

Daliso did his first show Feed This Black Man 20 years ago. The jokes were mediocre, there was a rap about poverty in the middle (which was as offensive as you might imagine) and the big finale involved a sandwich on stage.

20 years later, Daliso has done the Royal Variety Performance, written and performed four series of Citizen of Nowhere on BBC Radio 4, been a Britain's Got Talent finalist, toured nationwide and abroad... all sorts of things the 22-year-old Chaponda would never have imagined possible.

So, Feed This Black Man Again is a do-over, as the now widely-loved comic revisits the themes of that ancient debut show with the considerably enhanced comic talents that two decades' experience brings you.

Along the way he'll examine the huge differences between the way you think life will be at twenty, and the reality. Probably no sandwich at the end this time.

'Full of sharp one-liners and well crafted gags...a real talent' ★★★★ Metro
'Gets laughs out of topics other comedians shun' The Guardian
'Brilliantly bold, thoroughly engaging and provocative' Wee Review

The Lost Trades

An exciting Folk and Roots Trio who recently released their second album Petrichor.

The Lost Trades are a vocal harmony trio with a cool Laurel Canyon vibe. Three Wiltshire based singer songwriters (Jamie R Hawkins, Phil Cooper and Tamsin Quin) were brought together by a mutual love of modern folk and roots music, and joined forces in late 2019 for a three part harmony, modern folk adventure.

With a sound that is reminiscent of the California folk scene of the late 60s/early 70s, their vocal harmonies have been described as flawless, spine tingling and magical.

After a global pandemic cut short their first tour after just a single sold out gig, the band retreated to their songwriting rooms to work on their debut album, 'The Bird, The Book & The Barrel'. The album was released in June 2021 and was well received, spending 8 months in the Official UK Folk Albums Chart.

The follow up 'Petrichor' was released in March 2023 and immediately followed suit, entering the chart at #31.

A live performance involves easy interchanging of instruments, with each of the three playing guitar, bass and percussion at different points. There's always a fun intimacy to the show, with the three engaging in comfortable repartee with each other and the audience like a group of old friends.
