The Art of Winter: Painting and Drawing the Colder Months

There are no scheduled instances of The Art of Winter: Painting and Drawing the Colder Months. You can view similar events below.

Led by Jo Hall. 1564 was the year of the Big Cold; the first great winter of the little Ice Age which lasted until the 1800. It was especially cold in the Netherlands.

In 1565, Pieter Bruegel completed Hunters in the Snow, the first snow painting and one of the first great landscapes, influenced by his journey across the Alps. Taking this painting as our starting point we will explore the limited palette of winter using drawing and water based media.

For reference we will look at paintings by; Breugel, Caspar Friedrich, Impressionists (Monet and Sisley), Lowry, Gerhard Richter, Richard Cartwright
